I followed Baldric out into the black of night, firelight from the torches reflecting on the pure white snow, making it glow. Dark meeting the light. It was nice to see all of the torches lit once again.

We headed for the training grounds where three tall figures already stood. Josh, Felix, and James. The last of the three looked a bit pale but held his head high. I went to him.

“Are you sure about this?” I asked James, keeping my voice low despite knowing the three other men would clearly hear me.

James nodded stiffly but said nothing. He didn’t even meet my eye. He was nervous, of that much I was certain. He was giving up his ability to shift—everything he’d ever known—for a pair of fangs and an eternity with the woman he loved. If we all survived this shit show, that was. But there was more to the worry I saw in his eyes. This had nothing to do with him.

Annie.

“She’ll be fine,” I told him, placing a hand on his forearm. “She’s strong and she’s safe. You’ll see her again when this is over.”

He pursed his lips and then nodded once more. “Let’s get this over with,” he said.

“There’s still time to back out,” I said. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Then let us proceed,” Baldric said, snapping at Felix.

The big gladiator of a vamp turned and scooped up a pile of thick chains, carrying them toward James and me. I took an automatic step back.

“No.”

“No what?” Baldric asked me.

Felix plopped the restraints on the ground in front of us and the clanking sound sent a shudder ripping through my body.

“No chains,” I breathed, taking another step back. “No one will ever put chains on me again.”

“You need to be restrained,” Baldric said with a sigh, nodding to Felix who began shackling James’s wrists. “Being turned is extremely painful and the urges immediately after can send you into a killing spree. I cannot have either of you harming my people and killing yourself in the process.”

“No. Chains,” I bit out.

“I will restrain her,” Josh said.

Baldric shook his head. “You won’t be able to hold her once she is turned.”

“If I can’t, then those chains surely won’t be able to,” Josh pointed out, stepping beside me. “If she wants to kill after this, nothing will be able to stop her.”

Felix finished restraining James, holding onto the gathered strands of metal like a leash. “He has a point,” the vamp said. “She is already Chosen. The three of us together might not be enough. Maybe I should get Olive.”

“I’ll be fine,” I snapped, kicking away the remaining pile of chains. It sailed through the night, crashing into the side of the castle. I had been chained up and beaten twice in the span of a few months. Never again would I let that happen.

Baldric looked at me long and hard. “Fine. I will change the shift first. Perhaps you will change your mind when you see what you will soon face.
